Shanghai Through the Panoramic Eye II Shanghai Through the Panoramic Eye II

This book not only presents a picture of Shanghai, but also a pastiche of areas around the city extending as far away as Suzhou in Jiangsu province. Many parts of Shanghai's central and suburban districts have changed beyond recognition in recent times. Their traditional houses have been razed and their communities displaced only to be acceded by high-rise 'dragons'. Whilst the Shanghai Municipal Government has protected individual or small clusters of historic buildings they often now sit in an unfamiliar environment. Decrees of modernity and uniformity will guarantee that many houses featured in this book will not survive more than a few years - and if they do they will assume a commercial rather than a residential purpose.
